The Problem

Online Tracking & Privacy Invasion

Users feel their browsing activities are constantly monitored by unknown third parties, invading their privacy.

Excessive Targeted Advertising

Users are overwhelmed by personalized ads that follow them across websites, stemming from data collected about their online behavior.

Limited Personal Data Control

Many users lack control over who collects their personal information, especially when visiting multiple websites.

Confusing Privacy Settings

Different websites have different privacy settings, making it difficult for users to manage and protect their information consistently.

Increased Security Risks

The more personal data collected by third parties, the greater the potential risk for data breaches and identity theft.

Lack of Awareness

Users often don’t know which companies or entities are tracking their browsing, leading to uncertainty and discomfort.

Project Goals

USER ADOPTION

Drive User Adoption

Achieve a minimum active usage rate, with users actively engaging with key features like fingerprint masking to protect their privacy.

GROWTH

Increase Monthly Growth

Maintain a 2-3% monthly increase in user adoption post-release by addressing ongoing privacy concerns and staying competitive in the market.

MONETIZATION

Achieve User Satisfaction

focusing on providing a user-friendly experience that prioritizes privacy and ease of use to meet rising expectations.

Understanding Problem Space

Visualizing tracker mechanism

I researched web trackers and their impact on privacy, creating a detailed flowchart that categorized tracker types, mechanisms, legality, and risks. This served as a key reference, guiding the design and development of AntiTracker's core features.

TAKEAWAYS

Web Tracking is Widespread and Invasive

Users are often unaware that their online behavior is constantly monitored through cookies, fingerprinting, web beacons, and IP address tracking. This tracking is typically done without users' explicit consent, exposing them to privacy risks and data exploitation.

Existing Privacy Solutions Have Limitations

Common tools like ad-blockers, VPNs, and incognito mode provide limited privacy protection, as they do not fully prevent tracking by websites or third parties. This highlights a gap in existing privacy solutions and a need for more comprehensive tools.

Tracking Leads to Privacy Risks ,Unwanted Influence

Collected data from tracking is often sold or used for manipulative practices, such as targeted advertising, price manipulation, and even affecting users' insurance rates or credit scores.

TAKEAWAYS

Transparency and Control Tools like Ghostery offer powerful tracker blocking with detailed transparency,
allowing
users to see and control who is tracking them.

Digital Fingerprint Masking Competitors like Norton and Avast excel in disguising digital fingerprints to prevent
tracking,
but they often lack broader integration with other security tools.

VPN Integration Disconnect effectively combines tracker blocking with VPN services to enhance user privacy by masking locations.

Automatic Learning Privacy Badger provides an innovative, self-learning approach to blocking invisible
trackers
based on user behavior.

Broad Toolsets Iolo offers a wide range of privacy and system optimization tools, although it lacks a
specialized
focus on tracker blocking.

Approach

We chose the pop-over approach for its compact, focused design that aligns with the “Less is More” principle,
ensuring quick access to key features without overwhelming the user’s browsing experience.

Exploring Design Component

During the design and prototyping stage, we evaluated popup versus sidebar interfaces to determine the most user-friendly and non-intrusive option for AntiTracker.

Simplicity Pop-overs offer a minimalist design with a compact
interface,
allowing you to present only essential information and
actions
to users

Main focus Users will mainly use AT in a “set it and forget it” type
fashion
so there’s no need to actually open it aside from fixing an
issue
or curiosity - should be a simple fix without taking too much
space
of the screen

Focused Interaction With a pop-over, users can quickly access
specific
features or information. The temporary overlay helps
maintain
focus and prevents distractions, enabling users to
accomplish
tasks efficiently

Minimal Disruption Since pop-overs are not fixed on the screen and
appear
on top of the webpage, they are less obtrusive compared to
sidebars

More spacious layout, allowing for more content and
functionality to be displayed

Sidebars are well-suited for extensions that require
continuous interaction or navigation between multiple
sections

Sidebars occupy a fixed portion of the screen,
reducing the available space for the webpage content.

It provides a focused and contextual interface that
overlays the current page, allowing users to access
specific features or information quickly

Non-intrusive (best suited for lightweight interactions,
such as displaying notifications, presenting quick
actions, or providing brief information without
interrupting the user's workflow)

Compact design

They are less obtrusive since they don't occupy a fixed
space on the screen, but they may obstruct some
content temporarily
